letters · 25 August 2010, 16:06

Yesterday, Caleb and Clint were reading bedtime stories, when suddenly Caleb got up, picked up one of his alphabet blocks, showed it to Clint, and said, “D!” It was, in fact, a D. Clint boggled at him. “Since when did you know ‘D’?” he said. Up to this point, his known letters were O, X, and B.
I will sheepishly admit that the reason that O and X were his first letters is because of the PS2 controller that he likes to play with (he does not actually play on the PS2, he just liked to carry the controller around). He seemed curious about the markings, so one day, quite a while ago, I taught him the circle, X, triangle, and square. He is still a big fan of triangles. Sometime after that, he saw an O somewhere, and said it was a circle. I told him that it did look like a circle, but it was really an O. He latched onto that, and he loves to find Os everywhere. X’s are fun, too. He learned B from the Berenstain Bears’ B Book.
Back to last night. Caleb continued pulling out blocks and correctly identifying many letters — H, K, I … I can’t remember what else.
It turns out that the Baby Einstein Alphabet Books that we’ve been enjoying reading together suddenly clicked for him. Yesterday, we sat and read every single one (there is a separate little 3-page board ‘book’ for each letter containing pictures of three different things that start with that letter), and I pointed out to him (without particularly expecting him to understand), the big and little A, B, C, D, etc.

stairs, and other progress · 22 August 2010, 17:25

Clint and I watched (standing close by) while Josh climbed up four steps this morning. He likes pulling up on things and trying to climb them, if he can, more than he likes crawling.
Caleb has figured out screw-top bottles.
Nothing, and nobody, is safe.

more teeth · 19 August 2010, 08:44

Josh has his second tooth — the other bottom middle incisor.
Caleb has two more molars on the bottom.

too noisy · 13 August 2010, 08:31

I was getting an onion to chop up this morning, and I dropped it on the floor. Caleb looked over and said, “Mah-ee dop ai — doo noi-ee — ‘da-‘deep” (Mommy dropped onion — too noisy — Josh asleep)

grabbing · 2 June 2010, 22:08

Josh has begun to swipe at things, and grab them if he can, and bring them to his mouth for investigation. I was cleaning up in our spare room yesterday with him in the bouncy seat, and while my back was turned, an old 3 1/2” floppy disk must have slid and fallen onto his bouncy seat, so when I looked at him, he was gnawing on the floppy.

In general, he is somewhat finicky about his location. He likes relatively frequent changes of scenery. Oddly enough, there are times when he definitely does not want to be held, and becomes happy as soon as you put him down. He also likes a bit of alone time right before bed at night. I can’t seem to get him to go right from hanging out with us in the evening, to getting ready for bed, and then into bed. The routine that works right now is this: hanging out together, new diaper, etc., he gets fussy and tired, I hold him a bit, and then take him up to his room, where I turn the light on, spin the mobile, and leave him alone. (He is distinctly unhappy if I try to put him in the crib with the lights off at this point.) He parties in his crib for several minutes till he gets fussy. I go in, pick him up, turn off the light, and hold him for a bit. He does not, unlike Caleb, like to be fed into a stupor. He yawns, sucks his thumb, and then is ready to fall asleep. If he were our only child, we would probably not coddle him quite as much during the whole getting-ready-for-bed routine, but Caleb is usually in bed at this point, and if he’s already asleep, I feel bad bugging him, so I tend to hold Josh to prevent him from fussing as much as he would otherwise. During daytime naps when Caleb is awake, Josh doesn’t need to fuss in his crib more than 5 minutes or so until he falls asleep.
